Este site é o resultado de vários anos de pesquisa sobre arquiteturas exemplares, realizada pelo Grupo de Pesquisa A Construção Formal em Arquitetura, coordenado pelo Prof. Edson Mahfuz, sediado na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre) e financiado pelo CNPq.

 

As premissas fundamentais desta pesquisa são: [1] só se aprende arquitetura em contato direto com ela, e [2] a melhor arquitetura em todos os tempos nunca saiu do nada, sempre da própria arquitetura. Isso significa que para projetar bem é preciso conhecer em detalhe a melhor arquitetura acumulada ao longo da história, de modo análogo ao que acontece em outras áreas criativas como a música, a pintura, a literatura, etc. Não podendo visitar todas essas obras, a alternativa que mais se aproxima a isso é reconstruí-las por meio do desenho ou da modelagem tridimensional.

 

Ao longo dos anos, com o auxílio inestimável de bolsistas de Iniciação Científica do CNPq e da FAPERGS, fomos modelando e analisando edifícios de autores indiscutíveis, na convicção de que seu exame atencioso e detalhado pode contribuir para a aquisição de conhecimento indispensável para todo estudante e arquiteto.

 

Aqui podem ser vistas imagens dos modelos – os quais podem ser baixados para uso não comercial – e alguns textos analíticos podem ser lidos.

 

Edson Mahfuz é arquiteto formado pela UFRGS (Porto Alegre), pós-graduado pela Architectural Association School of Architecture (Londres, Inglaterra) e doutor em arquitetura (PhD), pela University of Pensylvania (Fildélfia, EUA). É autor de 3 livros, 21 capítulos de livros e mais de 80 artigos em revistas nacionais e internacionais. Atualmente é professor titular na UFRGS, onde leciona na graduação e na pós-graduação. This site is the outcome of several years of research on exemplary architectures done by the research group Formal Construction in Architecture, headed by Prof. Edson Mahfuz, based at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Brasil), and funded by CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico).

 

This ongoing research is based on two fundamental beliefs: [1] that one can only learn about architectural design in close contact with the products of architecture: its buildings and urban spaces; and, [2] that the best architecture of all times has always originated from architectural precedents. This means that in order to be a good architect it is mandatory to know in detail the best architecture accumulated through history, in a similar way as  in other creative fields like painting, literature, music, and so on. Since it is not feasible to visit the majority of exemplary works one must know, the closest way to get to know them is to reconstruct them by way of drawing or digital modeling.

 

Throughout these years, with the inestimable help of students on research grants from CNPq and FAPERGS, we modeled and analysed buildings by unquestionable authors convinced that their attentive and detailed scrutiny can contribute to the acquisition of essential knowledge by students and architects alike.

Edson Mahfuz holds a BArch from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Brasil), a Diploma (AADipl) from the Architectural Association School of Architecture (London, England) and a PhD from the University of Pensylvania (Philadelphia, USA). He is the author of 3 books, 21 book chapters and more than 80 articles in Brazilian and international magazines.
